What is Xanax?

Xanax (Alprazolam) is a member of the chemical group of drugs known as benzodiazepines. These drugs are used either as antianxiety agents, anticonvulsants, or sedatives (sleeping pills). They exert their effects by relaxing the large skeletal muscles and by a direct effect on the brain. In doing so, they can relax you and make you either more tranquil or sleepier, depending upon which drug you use and how much you take. Many doctors prefer benzodiazepines to other drugs that can be used for the same effects because benzodiazepines tend to be safer, have fewer side effects, and are usually as if not more, effective. The benzodiazepines are generally prescribed in any situation where they can be useful adjunct. The benzodiazepines, including Alprazolam, can be abused if taken for long period of time, and it is possible to experiment withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking the drug abruptly. Withdrawal symptoms include tremor, muscle cramp, stomach cramps, vomiting, insomnia, and convulsions.
